How to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans to Traditional Medicare
When it comes to Medicare, there are two main options to choose from: traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans. Traditional Medicare is a government-run health insurance program that covers Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), while Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Part C) are offered by private insurance companies and provide all the benefits of Part A and Part B, as well as additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage and vision and dental care.
If you’re trying to decide between traditional Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan, here’s what you need to know:
Coverage
Traditional Medicare covers a wide range of medical services and procedures, including hospital stays, doctor visits, and medical tests. However, it does not cover certain services like vision, dental, and hearing care. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits that are not covered by traditional Medicare, such as prescription drug coverage, wellness programs, and hearing, vision, and dental care.
Costs
Traditional Medicare generally has higher out-of-pocket costs than Medicare Advantage plans. For example, Medicare Part A requires a deductible for each hospital stay and a coinsurance amount for stays longer than 60 days. Medicare Part B has a monthly premium, an annual deductible, and coinsurance or copayments for most services. Medicare Advantage plans have a yearly out-of-pocket maximum, and some plans have lower copayments or coinsurance amounts than traditional Medicare.
Provider Network
With traditional Medicare, you can choose any healthcare provider that accepts Medicare. However, with a Medicare Advantage plan, you are typically limited to a network of providers. If you want to see a provider outside of the network, you may have to pay more out of pocket.
Prescription Drug Coverage
While traditional Medicare does not cover prescription drugs, you can enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D plan to get this coverage. However, most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage as part of their benefits package.
Additional Benefits
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, some Medicare Advantage plans also offer additional benefits like transportation to medical appointments, meal delivery, and home health services.
Enrollment
You can enroll in traditional Medicare during your initial enrollment period, which is typically three months before and after your 65th birthday. You can also enroll during the annual open enrollment period, which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. Medicare Advantage plans also have an initial enrollment period and an annual open enrollment period, but the dates may vary depending on the plan.
When comparing Medicare Advantage plans to traditional Medicare, it’s important to consider your own healthcare needs and budget. Review the coverage, costs, provider network, prescription drug coverage, and additional benefits of each option to determine which one is right for you.
