Medicare Insurance Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know

Turning 65? Your Complete Medicare Enrollment Checklist

Turning 65? Your Complete Medicare Enrollment Checklist

Turning 65 is a milestone, and for most Americans, it means becoming eligible for Medicare. But enrollment isn’t automatic for everyone, and the process can be confusing if you’re not prepared. Here’s a step-by-step checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything important.

Step 1: Mark Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your IEP is a 7-month window: 3 months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and 3 months after. This is when you should enroll in Medicare Parts A and B. Missing this window could result in lifelong late enrollment penalties.

Step 2: Decide If You Need Part B Right Away

If you’re still working and have employer coverage, you may be able to delay Part B without penalties. But if your employer has fewer than 20 employees, you should enroll in Part B when you’re first eligible. Confused about this rule? contact us for a free consultation.

Step 3: Choose Your Coverage Path

After enrolling in Parts A and B, you’ll need to decide between two main paths:

  • Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D for maximum flexibility and nationwide coverage
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) for bundled coverage with extra benefits like dental and vision

Step 4: Compare Prescription Drug Plans

If you take medications, make sure your Part D or Medicare Advantage plan covers your drugs affordably. Check the formulary and compare costs at different pharmacies. Drug costs can vary dramatically between plans.

Step 5: Review Your Coverage Annually

Even after you’re enrolled, review your coverage every year during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7). Plans and your health needs change, and switching could save you hundreds of dollars.
